Eva Green has claimed that her character in new Starz series Camelot will not be one-dimensional.

The Casino Royale star will play the sorceress Morgan in the fantasy drama, which also stars Joseph Fiennes and Jamie Campbell-Bower.

“I was worried at the beginning that she is evil and that’s it,” admitted Green. “But she’s a very rich character. And she wants to be a great queen. She believes in equality between men and women. She celebrates sexuality, nature, life.”

The actress added that Morgan’s rivalry with the young Prince Arthur (Campbell-Bower) “will evolve” as the series continues.

“She hates him at the beginning,” she confirmed. “But her head is telling her ‘I hate him’ while her heart is telling her otherwise.”

Green also admitted that she is frequently attracted to “extreme, intense roles” such as her Camelot character.

“There’s always something wrong with my characters,” she laughed.

French actress Eva Green needs love when she works on a new project.

“If I’m not passionate about the character, I can’t do it. Some actors work and work and work. I wish I could be like that,” Green says. “But I need to be in love.”

Her latest love is Morgan, half sister to King Arthur (Jamie Campbell Bower), in the new Starz original series “Camelot.” Morgan thinks she’s the heir to the throne until Merlin (Joseph Fiennes) reveals the existence of Arthur.

The series follows the battle between Morgan and Arthur for control of the kingdom.

Green wasn’t familiar with Morgan before being offered the part. The more she researched the character, the more her passions for the role grew.

The trick was to find just the right way to portray Morgan, a character who has been depicted in literature as everything from saint to sinner.

Although Morgan is a master of the black arts, Green saw her in more humanistic terms.

“I didn’t want her to be such a mystical figure. She’s a very damaged, very sensitive person. She’s been through a lot. The 15 years she was banished to a nunnery gave her plenty of time to become bitter,” Green says. “She’s completely obsessed with the throne to the point where it’s almost unhealthy. She will lose a lot of people she loves because of that.”

The one thing Green didn’t want to do was play Morgan as evil. She sees her use of dark forces to take control as just one of the tools she needs to become a good leader.

This is Green’s first television series. Before “Camelot,” her work was confined to feature films: “The Dreamers,” “Kingdom of Heaven,” “The Golden Compass” and “Casino Royale.”

She likes that the long commitment of a TV series gives her the time to explore her character, something she has not had with film roles.

“The evolution of Morgan is quite amazing. You see the child, the femme fatale. It’s a very powerful role,” Green says. “Sometimes in movies, you play the girlfriend and it’s quite boring. Here she’s somebody very bold.”

Right now, Green has 10 episodes of “Camelot” to bring Morgan to life. Whether she’ll have more episodes depends on audience numbers.

Either way, it seems that Green can fall in love with more than one character at a time. Her next film is on the life of opera singer Maria Callas.

“I adore her as a character,” Green says. “I will try to get the essence of her, because I will never be able to become her.”

WHERE TO WATCH

Starz has unleashed a brand new trailer from the new series “Camelot,” premiering on April 1st at 10pm ET/PT.

The 10-episode drama offers an epic retelling of the classic medieval tale of King Arthur and features an ensemble cast including James Purefoy as King Lot, Joseph Fiennes as Merlin, Jamie Campbell Bower as Arthur, and Eva Green in her television debut as the darkly powerful Morgan. The character-driven series also features Tamsin Egerton (Guinevere), Claire Forlani (Igraine) and Peter Mooney (Kay).

From Starz:

In the wake of King Uther’s sudden death, chaos threatens to engulf Britain. When the sorcerer Merlin has visions of a dark future, he installs the young and impetuous Arthur, Uther’s unknown son and heir, who has been raised from birth as a commoner. But Arthur’s cold and ambitious half sister Morgan will fight him to the bitter end, summoning unnatural forces to claim the crown in this epic battle for control.

These are dark times indeed for the new king, with Guinevere being the only shining light in Arthur’s harsh world. In the Starz original series Camelot, premiering on April 1st, French actress Eva Green plays Morgan, the beautiful and ruthlessly ambitious daughter of King Uther, who wishes to claim her right to her father’s throne. However, she has not counted on Merlin’s (Joseph Fiennes) plans or the existence of Arthur (Jamie Campbell Bower), her newly revealed half brother. In her pursuit of power and her willingness to do absolutely anything to take the throne that she believes is rightfully hers, Morgan gives herself over to dark forces that threaten the court of Camelot from within.

In a recent interview to promote this new epic series, Eva Green talked about stepping into the role of such an iconic character, working with both Joseph Fiennes and Jamie Campbell Bower, getting to shoot in Ireland, and the fantastic costumes she gets to wear. She also talked about her Sundance film, Perfect Sense, with Ewan McGregor, and the possibility that she will play opera star Maria Callas in the biopic, Callas.

Question: What’s it like to step into the role of Morgan?

EVA GREEN: It’s a great character. It’s full of colors, and it’s a gift. At drama school, I always wanted to play dark characters, like Lady Macbeth and Cleopatra, so it was a dream. It’s not a clichéd role. She’s not evil. I see her more as damaged. She believes herself to be the rightful heir to the throne, but because she’s a woman, she’s denied the throne and she will do absolutely anything to get it back.

With all the film work that you do, was it a difficult decision to sign on for a TV series and play a character for a longer period of time?

GREEN: Yeah. The good thing about it is that it’s five months and I will have time to do movies in between. This is such an iconic story and you have 10 episodes to explore a character. It’s not a girlfriend role that you could have in a movie. It’s a real ballsy character. She has some guts. That’s nice to play. Read More…

Starz has announced that it will preview new medieval drama Camelot two months before the show’s official premiere.

Earlier this month, it was announced that the series, which stars Joseph Fiennes and Eva Green, will debut on April 1.

However, network sources have confirmed to The Futon Critic that the pilot episode will air on February 25, following the finale of mini-series Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.

The full 64-minute premiere will air, beginning at 11/10c. The series will then formally launch in April at 10/9c, as previously announced.

Camelot will air 10 episodes as part of its first series. Later in 2011, Channel 4 will broadcast the show in the UK.
