Think you know Eva Green from The Golden Compass or maybe Casino Royale? Think again. Actually, if you’re a fan of the show Camelot, you might already have a sense of what Green is capable of. As she put it herself in an interview with Collider, her character isn’t evil, “I see her more as damaged,” and that idea of misinterpreted malevolence is certainly present in Green’s latest film, Cracks.

Green plays Miss G, a teacher and diving coach at an all-girls boarding school. She is so close to the girls on her team, she practically becomes like a mother to them – or maybe a sister – or perhaps a friend. That’s exactly Miss G’s problem; she has a hard time figuring out how close is too close, and when she’s pushing the limits when it comes imparting her own philosophies on the girls. When she gets a new recruit, a young Spanish girl named Fiamma (Maria Valverde), Miss G’s boundaries crumble entirely and the results are devastating.

This role would certainly be a challenge for any actress, but director Jordan Scott was confident enough in her abilities to forgo the audition process and go straight for Green. Still, being able to bring Miss G to life was going to take a lot of time and energy from every front – rehearsals, hair and makeup, wardrobe and more. In honor of the film’s March 18th release, Green sat down to tell us all about inhabiting Miss G’s twisted mind. Check it all out in the video interview below.

Eva Green stayed in a different hotel to her Cracks castmates to ensure her character was believable.

The actress portrays Miss G in the movie, which was out in many countries in 2009 but is released in America today. The film is about the relationships between girls at a boarding school, where Miss G teaches and is a diving coach. The character becomes friendly with her students, leading to problems as the movie progresses.

Eva, 30, was terrified she wouldn’t look like a real teacher in the film, as the female students were all in their late teens. She took drastic steps to ensure she would be able to command their attention.

“I was worried about being believable as a teacher. The girls were nearly 18, I was worried about not having enough authority so I stayed in a different place, a different hotel, just to keep the mystery. The rehearsals really helped, we really got on. They’re lovely girls, humble and a lot of fun,” she said.

“The most difficult scenes were the teaching scenes. I wanted to be strongly believable enough as a teacher which was difficult for me.”

French actress Eva prepared for the role by perfecting her English accent, which she did by watching old movies. She also read the book by Sheila Kohler which the film is based on, and was amazed by the differences. Miss G is much tougher in the tome, but Eva wanted to play up other aspects of her personality.

“I had to read it again and again and again because it is such a complex role and I was worried at the beginning because I didn’t want her to look sadistic, I wanted to make her look at human as possible so I had to find her flaws and cracks,” she told cinemablend in a video interview. “It’s a very damaged role and I had to do a lot of prep on it.”

Eva Green has claimed that her character in new Starz series Camelot will not be one-dimensional.

The Casino Royale star will play the sorceress Morgan in the fantasy drama, which also stars Joseph Fiennes and Jamie Campbell-Bower.

“I was worried at the beginning that she is evil and that’s it,” admitted Green. “But she’s a very rich character. And she wants to be a great queen. She believes in equality between men and women. She celebrates sexuality, nature, life.”

The actress added that Morgan’s rivalry with the young Prince Arthur (Campbell-Bower) “will evolve” as the series continues.

“She hates him at the beginning,” she confirmed. “But her head is telling her ‘I hate him’ while her heart is telling her otherwise.”

Green also admitted that she is frequently attracted to “extreme, intense roles” such as her Camelot character.

“There’s always something wrong with my characters,” she laughed.

French actress Eva Green needs love when she works on a new project.

“If I’m not passionate about the character, I can’t do it. Some actors work and work and work. I wish I could be like that,” Green says. “But I need to be in love.”

Her latest love is Morgan, half sister to King Arthur (Jamie Campbell Bower), in the new Starz original series “Camelot.” Morgan thinks she’s the heir to the throne until Merlin (Joseph Fiennes) reveals the existence of Arthur.

The series follows the battle between Morgan and Arthur for control of the kingdom.

Green wasn’t familiar with Morgan before being offered the part. The more she researched the character, the more her passions for the role grew.

The trick was to find just the right way to portray Morgan, a character who has been depicted in literature as everything from saint to sinner.

Although Morgan is a master of the black arts, Green saw her in more humanistic terms.

“I didn’t want her to be such a mystical figure. She’s a very damaged, very sensitive person. She’s been through a lot. The 15 years she was banished to a nunnery gave her plenty of time to become bitter,” Green says. “She’s completely obsessed with the throne to the point where it’s almost unhealthy. She will lose a lot of people she loves because of that.”

The one thing Green didn’t want to do was play Morgan as evil. She sees her use of dark forces to take control as just one of the tools she needs to become a good leader.

This is Green’s first television series. Before “Camelot,” her work was confined to feature films: “The Dreamers,” “Kingdom of Heaven,” “The Golden Compass” and “Casino Royale.”

She likes that the long commitment of a TV series gives her the time to explore her character, something she has not had with film roles.

“The evolution of Morgan is quite amazing. You see the child, the femme fatale. It’s a very powerful role,” Green says. “Sometimes in movies, you play the girlfriend and it’s quite boring. Here she’s somebody very bold.”

Right now, Green has 10 episodes of “Camelot” to bring Morgan to life. Whether she’ll have more episodes depends on audience numbers.

Either way, it seems that Green can fall in love with more than one character at a time. Her next film is on the life of opera singer Maria Callas.

“I adore her as a character,” Green says. “I will try to get the essence of her, because I will never be able to become her.”

WHERE TO WATCH

New episodes of “Camelot” air at 9 p.m. Fridays on Starz. The series debuted last week with a two-hour pilot that repeats tonight. Check listings for other times.

Eva Green recently signed on to star opposite Johnny Depp in Tim Burton’s adaptation of Dark Shadows. Green will play Angelique who, a “powerful witch who was alternately tormented and bewitched by her love-hate relationship with Barnabas Collins (Depp)” in the 1960s gothic soap opera. However, Green’s understanding is that her Angelique won’t be too familiar to fans of the show:

“I haven’t seen the TV series, but from what I’ve seen on the Internet, it’s very different. My character is very different. She’s American, blonde, cool, in the ’70s. She is this sexy witch, very powerful in town, she’s very cool. She has many faces.”

See what else Green had to say about Burton’s in a clip of the video interview with MTV Movies:

Here’s the transcript, including a bit not included in the clip.

“It’s something that he’s never done, I think. It’s much more focused on the actors. It could almost be a play. I haven’t seen the TV series, but from what I’ve seen on the Internet, it’s very different. My character is very different…

She’s American, blonde, cool, in the ’70s… She is this sexy witch, very powerful in town, she’s very cool. She has many faces.”

Green expects rehearsals to begin next month. Jackie Earle Haley, Bella Heathcote, Helena Bonham Carter, and Michelle Pfeiffer are in talks to star.

Starz has unleashed a brand new trailer from the new series “Camelot,” premiering on April 1st at 10pm ET/PT.

The 10-episode drama offers an epic retelling of the classic medieval tale of King Arthur and features an ensemble cast including James Purefoy as King Lot, Joseph Fiennes as Merlin, Jamie Campbell Bower as Arthur, and Eva Green in her television debut as the darkly powerful Morgan. The character-driven series also features Tamsin Egerton (Guinevere), Claire Forlani (Igraine) and Peter Mooney (Kay).

From Starz:

In the wake of King Uther’s sudden death, chaos threatens to engulf Britain. When the sorcerer Merlin has visions of a dark future, he installs the young and impetuous Arthur, Uther’s unknown son and heir, who has been raised from birth as a commoner. But Arthur’s cold and ambitious half sister Morgan will fight him to the bitter end, summoning unnatural forces to claim the crown in this epic battle for control.

These are dark times indeed for the new king, with Guinevere being the only shining light in Arthur’s harsh world. Faced with profound moral decisions, and the challenge of uniting a kingdom broken by war and steeped in deception, Arthur will be tested beyond imagination. Forget everything you think you know…this is the story of Camelot that has never been told before.
